Give Yourself a Break
The older I get the more I cherish time to “take a break”. Take a break from returning work related emails or from thoughts that start with “I should” or from looking at the time and wondering how I am going to get everything on my “to do” list done in the next two hours. All of these things are really just “things”. If I could get a handle on handling the “things’ in my life, my life would be less stressful.
It’s easy to sit back and tell yourself not to worry. I have heard, “Worry doesn’t solve anything” many times in my life. I guess I am really not a major worrier but I am a major fretter. I fret over “things”. I will admit that fretting has not always been bad for me. When I fret I sometimes come up with reasonable solutions to whatever it is I am fretting about. To be completely honest, I usually come up with my brainstorms while either in the shower or somewhere between 2:00 – 4:00 in the morning. Don’t ask me why. It just happens this way.
The Universe supplies us with so many “things”. Beautiful spring flowers, rain-forests, mountains, orange blossoms, stars, water, wind and the sun to name a few. Maybe if I spend a little more time noticing the things that the Universe supplies, and be thankful for these things, I would not fret over emails, household chores, kids or money as much as I used to because I would know that the Universe is bigger than all of these things put together and the Universe supports life.
Coming full circle on this topic is now clear to me. A dear friend recently asked me to read and provide opinion on one of her short stories with the title “Thankful”. She wrote about the idea that being thankful is so much more than giving thanks. It is about being grateful and truthful and sincere. Living with integrity and social acceptance. For me, one of the most important pieces of her writing was including the concept that being thankful is about having trust. How in the world does “trust” and being “thankful” coexist? I can now tell you that if you don’t “trust” that the Universe will supply you with everything you need and if you don’t capture in your day those things the Universe supplies, you will never be able to be thankful for all there is your life to be thankful for.
Give yourself a break. Even if you are in the middle of a very important meeting or savagely cleaning behind the shoes in the closet or changing a terrible diaper, STOP for a moment and trust that spring is around the corner, the snow topped mountains will provide water for the streams, the flower blossoms will provide fruit and whatever it is that you are dealing with at that very moment is just that; it’s just a moment. The moment will come and go but the Universe will never leave you. Give yourself a break and find something great in that one moment and let the Universe support your life.
